Horses will be galloping and witches will be flying their way into Fort Lauderdale soon. The 2012-2013 Broadway season will include the Tony-winning play War Horse, as well as the Broadway hit musical Wicked. Other offerings include Million Dollar Quartet, Sister Act, Agatha Christie’s BBC Murders, Flashdance, and The Addams Family. All shows will play the Broward Center for the Performing Arts and the Parker Playhouse.
Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins will storm the Broward Center from November 6 through November 18. Set at Sun Records in Memphis on December 4, 1956, Million Dollar Quartet tells the story of the twist of fate that brought the four music legends together for the only time in their careers for an impromptu recording that has become known as one of the greatest rock jam sessions of all time.
The funky nuns of Sister Act will make their Fort Lauderdale debut December 18 through December 30. The musical comedy (based on the hit film) focuses on disco diva Deloris Van Cartier, who witnesses a crime and goes into hiding in a convent. Under the suspicious watch of Mother Superior, Deloris helps her new “sisters” find their voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own.
Murder, chills and intrigue come to the Parker Playhouse when Agatha Christie’s BBC Murders runs from January 15, 2013 through February 3. The show consists of four of the author’s classic tales: Three Blind Mice, Yellow Iris, Butter in a Lordly Dish and Personal Call.
Flashdance will shimmy onto the Fort Lauderdale stage from March 5, 2013 through March 17. Based on the hit 1983 movie, Flashdance tells the story of Alex, a working-class girl from Pittsburgh striving to make her dreams of becoming a professional dancer a reality. The show features the hit songs from the movie, “Flashdance—What a Feeling,” “Maniac,” “I Love Rock & Roll” and 10 original songs.
The Addams Family will snap their way into Fort Lauderdale from April 9, 2013 through April 21. Based on the bizarre and beloved characters created by Charles Addams, this macabre musical finds the Addams clan put to the test when outsiders come to dinner, hurling Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsley, Uncle Fester, Grandma and Lurch headlong into a night that will change the family forever.
War Horse, winner of five Tony Awards, will run from May 7, 2013 through May 19. Using extraordinary puppets, War Horse tells the story of young Albert and his beloved horse, Joey, who is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France at the outbreak of World War I. Albert, unable to forget Joey and still not old enough to enlist, embarks on a mission to find his horse and bring him home.
The Broadway mega hit Wicked flies into Fort Lauderdale from January 30, 2013, through February 17. A vivid reimagining of the classic The Wizard of Oz, the musical spotlights the untold stories of Oz’s most famous characters: the Wicked Witch of the West and her unlikely friend, Glinda the Good. The Grammy-winning score by Stephen Schwartz features the songs “The Wizard and I,” “Popular” and “Defying Gravity.”
