'Everyone loves to dress up and I'm in heaven!'

Jeigh Madjus has plenty of fun as the zany maid Jacob in the national tour of La Cage aux Folles, which plays Fort Lauderdale from June 12 through June 24. The Canadian actor told that his offstage persona isn’t a far cry from the mischievous butler he plays, who serves the show's central couple, played by George Hamilton and Christopher Sieber. Madjus opened up about living in dress-up “heaven,” having boundless energy and striving for big dreams.

Madjus says he loves wearing Matthew Wright’s over-the-top costumes. “Jacob wears the most ridiculous and outrageous outfits. From sequin pasties and a petticoat to a gold lame bathing suit, I get to wear some amazing things,” Madjus said. “It really sets me up for how crazy Jacob is and really gets me into character. Everyone loves to dress up and I'm in heaven!”

However, Madjus doesn’t need to put on a gold lame bathing suit to amp up his energy. “I'm pretty much the same outside the theater—just less makeup, no dresses and definitely no heels!” Madjus said. Madjus relates to Jacob’s need for the spotlight. “He's got big dreams and his goals are set high. I'm no different.”

This revival of La Cage took home three Tony Awards in 2010, including wins for Best Revival of a Musical and Best Direction. The show features a book by Harvey Fierstein and a score by Jerry Herman, which includes such memorable numbers as “I Am What I Am” and “The Best of Times.”
