Wicked - Season Option

The untold musical story of the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good.

Jeanna de Waal Talks About Her ‘Addiction’ to Being ‘Popular’ in the National Tour of Wicked

Wicked's biggest fan is one of its stars. Jeanna de Waal, who plays Glinda on the national tour, told that she has been "obsessed" with the Stephen Schwartz-Winnie Holzman musical since its premiere in 2003. Find out what the bubbly Wicked star has to say about being "popular" in the hit show, which plays Fort Lauderdale's Broward Center from January 30 through February 17.

Although de Waal said that her big number "'Popular' is addictive because of the audience’s reaction," she cited Glinda’s arc throughout the show as her favorite aspect of playing the part. "[She goes] from silly, entitled school girl to the leader of Oz," de Waal said. "Her emotions are all profoundly true and unmasked. It's a challenge and a joy to play someone who leaps from highs to lows in a heartbeat."

Exploring Glinda’s range of emotions in Wicked has also helped de Waal to put her own life in perspective. "In my search for success and fulfillment in my life, I need to stay true to what it is that I originally wanted," she said, referencing the show’s message. “It’s very easy to get distracted by riches, glamour and power; that doesn't necessarily lead to happiness."

Wicked is a reimagining version of The Wizard of Oz that spotlights the untold stories of Oz’s most famous characters: the Wicked Witch of the West and her unlikely friend, Glinda the Good. De Waal is joined onstage by Christine Dwyer as Elphaba, Billy Harrigan Tighe as Fiyero, Paul Kreppel as the Wizard and Marilyn Caskey as Madame Morrible.
